In a compendium one puts information into their own words — it is not a “commonplace book”. A commonplace book is a collection of quotations, usually organized according to a specific scope and for a particular purpose, usually categorized to subject headings.
A commonplace book is useful when preparing a master thesis or a doctorate to give credit where credit is due when quoting others and citing one’s sources.
“A collection of concise but detailed information about a particular subject, especially in a book or other publication.”
“Another definition is “a collection of things, especially one systematically gathered.”
If you know me I am a big fan of “thorough study” like systematic theology because I hate the thought that I came to the wrong conclusion due to the fact that I didn’t have all the information.
Even so, a compendium is less formal than a proper essay or doctorate, they have their place but those of us who live in a state of collegium — “to show ourselves approved” — are constantly dissecting and breaking things down to the smallest element for a more concise answer to our questions and search for truth.
