When you line up all the scriptures about the spiritual gifts and healings/miracles with signs & wonders following believers, then, line up the verses placed out of context to support Cessationism (to cease spiritual gifts and miracles)— the conclusion is self-evident.
IT IS GOD’S WILL TO SAVE, DELIVER, HEAL WITH SIGNS & WONDERS FOLLOWING BELIEVERS -Mark 16:17.
A simple word search reveals the two opposing positions and a compare and contrast with scriptures lined up will show any sincere Kingdom seeker which one is biblical.
There are only three passages that are taken to support cessationism, They are NOT Two or more witness but three passages that were written through Paul the Apostle (if you accept that Paul wrote Hebrews and if you accept the biblical standard of BY TWO OR MORE WITNESSES TO RATIFY DOCTRINE).
'One witness doth not rise against a man for any iniquity, and for any sin, in any sin which he sinneth; by the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, is a thing established - Deuteronomy 19:15.
But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established - Matthew 18:16.
This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established. 2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare - 2 Corinthians 13:1.
Without this standard innocent people could die, bad doctrines could be ratified and devils can con us with the text into error and catastrophic failure. However, the Cessationists persist without the biblical standard.
The First Passage Cessationists use is:
Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away - 1 Corinthians 13:8 ESV.
If we focus only on this passage in the light of the cessationist point of view, we could be deceived but good Kingdom seekers and theologians know better than to isolate a scripture. We must compare Scripture with Scripture to establish proper context.
Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way - 1 Corinthians 12:29-31.
Yes, walking in Love the more excellent way but still nothing that underscores the cessationists position.
The third passage Hebrews 2:3-4:
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will - Hebrews 2:3-4.
If anything these three main passages that are written through the same witness underscores that continuationism is a certified biblical doctrine and cessationism has no real Scriptural foundation to ratify its position and thus, cancel out dozens of direct and multiple more Scriptures indirectly with multiple witnesses Old and New Testament. The Church is called to be full of the Love of God which is shed abroad in our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit just like Jesus.
Here are some search engine results with there links I read through before I wrote my Biblically founded conclusions:
Continuationism and Cessationism are opposing Christian beliefs about the nature of spiritual gifts. Continuationists believe that spiritual gifts, such as prophecy and speaking in tongues, are still available today. Cessationists believe that these gifts ended with the apostolic age. [1, 2, 3]
This doctrine states that spiritual gifts, such as healing, prophecy, and speaking in tongues, are no longer given to the church. Cessationists believe that these gifts were given for a specific purpose and time, and that they ended when that time and purpose were fulfilled. [1, 4]
This doctrine states that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including prophecy and speaking in tongues, are still available today. Continuationists believe that these gifts are given by God and should be sought after and prayed for. [2, 3, 5]
Some reasons for cessationism include: [1, 6]
• The gifts were given for a specific time and purpose
• The abuse and misuse of speaking in tongues
The debate between cessationism and continuationism is ultimately about the authority and sufficiency of God's Word. [7]
